The national women’s football team will take on Australia’s young Matildas today in the opening match of the Four Nations Cup in Canberra.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Vanuatu’s head coach Robert Yalou described the tournament as a valuable opportunity to compete against strong teams such as Australia, Thailand, and Solomon Islands.

“This tournament is a great opportunity to prepare the girls for the Nations Cup in July,” Yalou said.

“Big thanks to Australian Football for making it happen. For me as a coach, it is a privilege to play against teams like Australia, Thailand, and our neighbors, Solomon Islands.”

Australia’s interim head coach, Kory Babington, acknowledged Vanuatu’s strengths, noting their structured play, technical skills, and physical quality.

“Playing a senior team is often difficult for youth teams, particularly for quite young players. The technical skills and ability to improvise make them dangerous,” Babington said.

“We will have to be organized and good with the ball. One thing for sure is we respect every opponent here because they all have good qualities.”

Despite Vanuatu having a smaller squad, Babington expects them to be competitive.

“Our focus is on our style of play and how we want to approach the game,” he added. “We have to be aware of the opponent’s shape and physical qualities, but our approach will heavily focus on Australia.”

The tournament serves as key preparation for Vanuatu ahead of the Nations Cup in July.
