To kickstart 2025, we are celebrating the elegant Shirley Abraham!
As the CEO of VANGO, a leader in Vanuatu’s civil society sector, and a proud mother of four, Shirley is a powerhouse dedicated to serving communities and uplifting humanity.
Hailing from Uripiv, Malekula, her leadership journey—from revitalizing VANGO to supporting her husbands business—reflects her strength and determination.
When she’s not navigating the NGO world, Shirley keeps things simple and grounded—whether it’s spending time with family, running, or embracing her love for fashion with local brands.
She lives by this quote, “Always have self-confidence, be innovative and creative. Start a new business, take that job promotion or pursue your education—it’s never too late!”

Name
Shirley Abraham
Age
38 years old
Where are you from?
I am from Uripiv which is in the heart of Malekula.

Tell us about your family.
I come from a family of seven! I grew up with four siblings – three brothers and a sister.
I now have a family of my own with my husband, who is from Ambae. We have three sons and a daughter. My eldest son is Jayden, my daughter Erin, is my second, my third son is Jordan and my youngest is David.
Each day I try to show up as a role model for my children, my community and my church group. If there’s anything I am proud to teach my children it’s to always respect people despite their difference in culture, religions, age and ability.
What do you like to do in your spare time? Any hobbies?
My hobbies definitely change as I get older.
I liked to play sports in my college days but now with my busy work schedule, the moment I get home I just want to spend time with my family, especially my children and parents. I also do yoga and go for a run once a week.

What do you study? Do you work?
I studied Management, Human Resource and Leadership and now have a fulltime job as the Chief Executive Officer of Vanuatu Association of Non-Government Organisations (VANGO).
I have worked in the NGO field for most of my adult life, serving in various leadership roles in different sectors. I was able to support the revitalization of Vanuatu Association of NGOs in 2017 and later I was appointed the role of the Chief Executive Officer during the reconfiguration of the organization in 2023. We have an amazing team at VANGO who are dedicated to supporting the community and humanity.
What do you aspire to do in the future?
I would like to become a successful entrepreneur or businesswoman possibly owning multiple businesses.

What is a quote that you live by?
Always have self-confidence, be innovative and creative. Start a new business, take that job promotion or pursue your education career – it’s never too late!
How would you describe your style?
I like to keep it simple. I work closely with communities, so I usually go for a simple style that displays confidence while being down to earth so that I am approachable and so I get to better understand their needs. Formally, I would have different dress codes for different meeting occasions whether in a private sector meeting or a government meeting.

Who influences your style?
Now, the bags at Creative Hands and clothes at Etam influence what I wear.
What beauty products do you use (including perfume)?
I like to buy my perfumes from Paris Shopping and will occasionally buy my jewelry from Prouds. I like to use the Aloe vera oil from Noa Noa for my skin and my hair. On special occasions I like to go to the TJ Beauty Salon & Spa for light make up.

What is something you love about yourself?
I am a strong woman, and I get things done. I like to lead, and I have a passion to serve the community and humanity. We all have different gender, age, social status, ethnicity, religions but one thing we have in common is we are all human beings, and we need to learn to embrace the diversity in these different dimensions.

What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self?
I wish I could tell my younger self to work harder, not to be afraid to take risks and pursue my dreams.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
I am a fulltime working mother and a leader in the civil society sector. I also serve in other governing national institutions. I am supporting my husband who owns and manages a successful trades business in Vanuatu.
