A student from Matevulu College, Chloe Wilson, has been awarded the prestigious Lini Scholarship for 2025.

She will pursue her studies at the National University of Vanuatu (NUV), becoming the second recipient of this scholarship to study at the institution.

Programme Manager for Political, Security, and Legal Affairs at the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), Ilan Kiloe, expressed gratitude to NUV for its continued collaboration with MSG in facilitating the Lini Scholarship programme.

Kiloe reflected that the scholarship was endorsed by MSG leaders in 2013 during a summit in Nouméa.

The initiative was established to honor the founding fathers of MSG and their vision for the region.

“Leaders recognise the importance of youth, as the future of our nations lies with young people,” Kiloe stated. He noted that while the initiative was introduced in 2013, it was not fully implemented until 2022. Last year, two recipients benefited from the scholarship, and following its success, the programme has continued this year with one awardee.

Director of the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), John Kaltau, extended the government’s appreciation to MSG for including the scholarship programme in its portfolio.

He emphasised that the initiative aligns with the vision of the late Father Walter Lini, Vanuatu’s founding father of political independence, and plays a crucial role in recognising and supporting the country’s future leaders.

The late Father Walter Lini’s eldest daughter, Lora, expressed gratitude for the continuation of the scholarship and the recognition of her late father’s legacy.

Ms Lini thanked MSG and the Government of Vanuatu for facilitating the programme and allowing MSG to have a physical presence in the country.

“This year’s award is a great honor and privilege,” she said. “Father Walter Lini himself held two doctorates—one in Philosophy from Cambridge University and another in Technology from the University of Technology in Papua New Guinea. We encourage the recipient to embrace this opportunity, as this scholarship carries the legacy of Pacific and Vanuatu leadership.”

One of Ms Wilson’s relatives also acknowledged the significance of the award, stating that it comes with “weight, respect, and humility.” He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity given to their daughter.

In her remarks, Ms Wilson thanked God for the opportunity and conveyed appreciation to the MSG team for their collaboration in making her studies at NUV possible. She will be pursuing a Diploma in Resilience & Humanitarian Action.

The Lini Scholarship continues to serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of Father Walter Lini, Vanuatu’s longest-serving Prime Minister, who led the nation for 11 years.
