Celebrating-International-Volunteer-Day-2024 – Australian-volunteers-supporting-locally-led-development-in-Vanuatu

Australian volunteers make a valuable contribution to the development of Vanuatu and form lifelong friendships and connections with their local host organisations.

This week the Australian High Commission (AHC) in Vanuatu celebrated International Volunteer Day (IVD) with Australia volunteers, volunteer alumni, and partner organisations. IVD acknowledges and celebrates the spirit of volunteerism, and the contribution volunteers make to sustainable development at the local, national and international levels.

Australia’s volunteer programme places skilled Australians into partner organisations in Vanuatu to support a wide variety of activities including policy development, medical training, mentoring and disability support. This is in line with our commitment to locally led development and supporting the development aspirations of organisations in Vanuatu.

“Australian is proud to have supported skilled Australians to volunteer in Vanuatu since the 1960s. Inthat time hundreds of Australians have volunteered their professional expertise to organisations throughout the country, working side by side with their ni-Vanuatu colleagues across a wide range of sectors”, said Ms Emily Fisher, Deputy High Commissioner at the AHC.

Australian volunteers are supporting Vanuatu’s health sector through assignments with Vila Central Hospital (VCH), ProMedical and Ministry of Health (MoH), stationed in Port Vila, Santo, Malekula and Ambae. There are currently three Australian volunteers at VCH, Dr Sarah Mikhail, Emergency Medicine Specialist, Marian Barsoum, Emergency Nurse Educator, and Claire Van Der Merwe, Nurse Educator.

“I want to thank all the volunteers who have supported the Vanuatu health system. The work you have done to mentor young doctors and support our health professionals is so valuable and so appreciated,” said Dr Sereana Natuman, Director Curative Services in the MoH.

Working at the community level and with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and civil society is another key focus of volunteer assignments in Vanuatu.  Australian volunteer, Katherine Webber, is supporting local NGO Sista as a Programme Management Support and Mentor.  Ms Webber said, “I’m volunteering because I want women and girls in Vanuatu to make informed decisions on issues important to them. This means having strong organisations, like Sista, that increase access to information on gender equality.”

Australian volunteers and their partner organisations also joined other volunteers from New Zealand, United States of America, France and Japan at a community event on Thursday 5thof December at the seafront, which showcased the work of Sista, VASANOC and VCH.
