Live-&-Learn-Vanuatu-empowers-women-farmers-in-West-Gaua

Live & Learn Vanuatu (LLV), in partnership with the European Union (EU), is advancing sustainable agriculture and empowering women through its Strengthening Nature-Based Agriculture Project.

Recently, the LLV team embarked on a mission to the remote island of Gaua, undertaking a 13-hour sea journey to deliver essential agroforestry materials to six women-led farmer groups in West Gaua.

Communities in Bushman’s Bay, Quatagaveq, Ondar, Dolav, Doal, and Koro received vital tools and resources, including rotovators, chainsaws, fencing materials, and vegetable seeds. These resources are essential for establishing one-hectare agroforestry plots in each community, aimed at boosting food security, protecting the environment, and creating sustainable livelihoods.

Agroforestry, which combines food crops and trees in the same area, offers numerous benefits such as improved soil health, biodiversity, and climate resilience. The project revitalises this traditional practice to ensure long-term food production and economic growth for the communities.

The agroforestry plots will enable communities to grow diverse crops, including fruits, nuts, and vegetables, and plan for future products such as wood for building materials. The initiative also includes workshops on soil management and modern planting techniques, transforming traditional farming methods.

Project Coordinator Mr. Emil Samuel commended the communities for their enthusiasm and commitment. “The people of West Gaua have shown incredible cooperation and determination. Their dedication to this project is inspiring, and we are already seeing positive impacts,” he said.

However, challenges remain. Land disputes and wild pigs threaten the success of the project, and the remote location limits access to income and resources. LLV is addressing these issues through workshops and training to foster understanding and unity among community members.

The agroforestry project is about more than food security; it is creating economic opportunities. Women farmers are preparing to sell their produce locally and transport long-term products like dried fruits and nuts to markets in Port Vila and Luganville. The project has empowered women and youth, encouraging them to take leadership roles in agriculture and contribute to their communities’ resilience.

LLV extends its thanks to the European Union and the farmers of West Gaua for their unwavering commitment to this initiative. Together, they are building a sustainable and prosperous future, one plot at a time.
