Man who killed partner in jealous rage sentenced
A 26-year-old man who killed his partner in a jealous rage in 2023 has been sentenced to 9 years and 6 months’ imprisonment.
The Supreme Court heard that Thomson Mavun Man was jealous and suspicious of his partner having affairs with other men, so he assaulted her with a knife. He also used an iron rake to assault her.
Her medical record confirmed that the direct cause of death was blunt force injuries and incised wounds to her head and upper limbs.
Mavun pleaded guilty to a charge of intentional homicide without pre-meditation. After considering the aggravating factors and previous judgements, Judge Maree MacKenzie set a starting point of 15 years’ imprisonment for him.
Mavun’s sentence was reduced by 3 years and 9 months due to his guilty plea, with an additional 9 months reduction for being a first offender, cooperating with the police, and showing some remorse.
The young man already spent 12 months in custody, so his sentence was again reduced by 12 months.
Judge MacKenzie refused to suspend his sentence.
“While you (Mavun) have no prior convictions, pleaded guilty at the first reasonable opportunity, and show some remorse, this was very serious offending. You lost control and took the life of your partner, a young woman in a brutal way. A domestic homicide such as this requires a stern response…” stated the judge.
Mavun was given 14 days to appeal the sentence.
Woman gets suspended sentence for possession of husband’s cannabis
A 38-year-old woman from Ambrym was given a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to possessing cannabis.
In May of this year, Sylvie Bong surrendered a bag of dried cannabis to the police weighing 80kg.
The Supreme Court heard that Bong’s husband planted the cannabis for his use. He went to New Zealand and asked her to look after them. When she heard that the police were coming for them, she removed the cannabis plants from the garden and hid them in the house.
Bong was given a sentence start point of 18 months’ imprisonment, which was reduced by 4 and a half months for his guilty plea.
Her sentence was further reduced by 2 months, with an additional 2 months reduction for personal factors and coop rating with the police in the case.
Bong was remanded in custody for 19 days, resulting in a further sentence reduction by 6 weeks. She was warned not to offend again in the next 18 months or she will serve her sentence and other penalties that may be imposed.
The court ordered that the materials be destroyed.
Young man pleads guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with minor
A young man who pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor on Malekula has been sentenced to 5 years and 2 weeks’ imprisonment.
He was 22 years old when he committed the offence against the 12-year-old victim in two different isolated areas.
He was given a sentence start point of 9 years’ imprisonment. The sentence was reduced by 3 years due to his guilty plea, and a further 10 months for being a first offender, having some remorse and cooperating with the police.
A further 6 weeks sentence reduction was granted for the 3 weeks spent in custody from February to March 1.
Judge Maree MacKenzie stated that the nature of the offending does not justify suspending the sentence.
“Children need to be protected. Sexual activity with vulnerable young females must be condemned, as recognised by the Court of Appeal in Public Prosecutor v Gideon. Suspension of the sentence would send a wrong message both to you and others. Whether or not the victim was willing is irrelevant. It is an offence to have intercourse with a child under 13 years…” the judge stated.
