This week we published a court document of the Freswota Community Survival School Principal being sentenced for a crime he committed 10 years ago when he was 15 years old to a 9-year-old female relative. This man, Tougen Herkins, committed this heinous act and then went on to become a leader of an establishment that cares for the minds of our children.
After reading his court case, I think about the teachers who have taken sexual advantage of their students, which we covered in our paper. Year after year, a new story comes to light, a new “Herkins” is found, charged and sentenced.
According to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Act, any teacher that is sentenced for over 12 months automatically has their teacher’s licence cancelled. While that’s one form of discipline, I don’t think that it’s enough, especially when it comes to crimes that are sexual in nature.
Teachers need to work with the Department of Corrections and set-up a sexual offender registry and continuously update that registry with names, bios, and faces of these predators so that they will never enter a classroom indefinitely.
I once asked the Director of Corrections about a sex registrar for our sex offenders and he did mention that it’s something they would consider later down the line. I believe that we should create this sex registrar this year for the safety of our children and the children to come.
I have kids myself, and I swear to the man upstairs, as a parent, it makes me worried to read about these stories where teachers are having relations with students and a principal with a dark history like Herkins. Our country is riddled with problems and we need to start addressing them and finding solutions.
This whole week I’ve been trying to get a definitive statement from TSC in regards to sexual offenders and if they’re able to return as educators after serving their term in prison. After numerous calls to board members of TSC and finally managing to speak with two of them, neither could give a clear answer that question.
“Can teachers/principals who are charged for a sexual offence return to the classroom as educators?”
Who has the answer to this? I’m asking on behalf of every parent who has kids in Early Childhood Care and Education, Primary, High School and University, public and private, can someone provide us parents with some assurance that these sexual predators are not walking back into classrooms after serving their term?
If they are able to, then this is something worth marching for and definitely a petition I would gladly sign.
A petition to start a sex registrar to help identify all our sex offenders, shared with immigration so they’re not able to travel and shared with educational institutions so they’re not able to teach, this would serve as a good deterrence and would give us parents peace of mind.
What do you say TSC?
