Citizens, particularly the young generation, should celebrate independence with a pride rather than viewing it as an opportunity for fundraising or other purposes.

This statement was made by the Chairlady of the Port Vila Independence Organising Committee, Maryline Abel.

Everyone should be proud that we live in an independent country compared to others who are still striving for their freedom, such as the Kanaks, she said.

The meaning of independence must not be taken lightly, as there are some brave individuals who sacrificed their lives for the freedom being enjoyed today, said the Chairlady.

Abel said Vanuatu, as a nation, has encountered and will continue to face challenges, but there are achievements worthy of celebration. There are challenges but it’s crucial for everyone to unite as a country to navigate through each challenge, as reflected in this year’s theme, she said.

“As one people, we build a better Vanuatu” is the theme for this year’s 44th Independence anniversary.

Town Clerk and Secretary of the committee, David Hopa, said the reason why they will be organising a public forum is to education young people that achieving political struggle was a hard fight, and that they should own that freedom instead of being negative.

The commander of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Defence Force who led a team to stop the Santo rebellion and the PNG Prime Minister at the time are expected to be part of the forum to talk about the roles they played in that historical event. Vanuatu’s former presidents and prime ministers will also participate.

Hopa said a lot of young people lack knowledge about the history of independence, thus it’s an opportunity to learn from these figures.

The official program of the five-day independence celebration is expected to be released next week. Various activities are planned for each day, including string band competitions, island dress competition, sporting events and children’s educational quizzes.
