During the recent Vanuatu Widows Association (VWA) Day celebration at Saralana Park in Port Vila, Ms Marie Kalkoa, the newly elected President of the Association, urged women across the nation to unite and elevate their status within society.

Ms Kalkoa, a former councillor, highlighted the pressing issues facing Ni-Vanuatu women and widows, emphasising the need for collective action and a shift in mind set to be able to achieve greater representation and support for women at all levels of the society.

“Women must cooperate and work together as a team to promote their status inside the community and society,” she said.

The VWA President urged women throughout the country to rethink their approach towards each other, pointing out that many Ni-Vanuatu women suffer from what she described as a “polluted mindset.”

“A polluted mindset happens when women sit around and gossip about each other, bringing other women down instead of uplifting each other,” she explained.

She asserted that this negative behaviour hampers the ability of women to stand united and advocate for their rights and needs effectively.

According to her, lack of female representation in the nation’s Parliament is to be attributed to this “polluted mindset”.

“That is why when female leaders speak up, they don’t listen, and that is also the reason why women don’t have enough representatives inside the Parliament,” said Ms Kalkoa.

In the interview with the Vanuatu Daily Post, the VWA President did not only talk about identifying problems but also about inspiring change.

“I want to emphasise that it is time for us to change our mind set,” she declared, calling on all Ni-Vanuatu women to stand in solidarity with each other. “We will continue to work hard for this.

“I want to encourage every widow and every woman around the country to work together to protect each other and help each other.”

Ms Kalkoa also appealed directly to national leaders, urging them to recognise and address the specific needs of widows.

“I want to appeal to our national leaders to look into the needs that the widows have,” she said. “I want to appeal to them to find solutions on how they can help the widows in our country with their needs.”

Furthermore, Ms Kalkoa advocated for legislative measures to ensure the safety and well-being of widows. “I would like to see a law in place to secure the safety of the widows in Vanuatu because most of them don’t have anyone to be there for them,” she concluded.

Ms Kalkoa’s remarks reflect her objectives as the new leader of the VWA.

Her vision is clear: a united, supportive community where women uplift each other and assert their rightful place in society.
