workshop-empowers-female-athletes

Over 20 elite female athletes from Port Vila have attended a workshop on health awareness and life skills, organized by the Vanuatu Women in Sports (VANWIS) Association yesterday.

Held at the Grand Hotel in Port Vila, the workshop featured two prominent female role models who educated participants from various sports disciplines, including cricket, table tennis, swimming, weightlifting, rugby, tennis, rowing, and paralympic sports.

It was chaired by Midwife Nikita Maucotel of Vanuatu Private Hospital (VPH) and the General Manager of Further Arts, Viviane Obed.

The workshop introduced essential interpersonal life skills to the women, covering topics such as communication, building self-esteem, conflict management, leadership, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Midwife Maucotel provided insights on preparing healthy meals, understanding the female cycle and hormones, intimate hygiene, and family planning methods.

The athletes listened attentively, engaging with the material and asking questions to gain a better understanding of how these topics could enhance their lives as women in sports.

As the session ended, while Maucotel emphasized the importance of educating women, particularly athletes, about health and wellness.

GM Obed highlighted the cultural sensitivity of these issues and the need to educate women, especially those who are mothers and role models in sports.

She stressed that being a woman should not hinder one’s ability to lead in the community and that a love for sports can coexist with a successful career and -or family life.

“I understand our position as women, and this workshop aims to empower these athletic women with the mentality that they can achieve their goals and have support,” Obed said.

She expressed hope that more women and girls should step into the spotlight as the new generation of Vanuatu women in sports.

Table Tennis Gold Awardee, Priscilla Tommy, expressed gratitude to VANWIS and the two chairwomen for addressing sensitive issues that require attention.

Vanessa Vira, Rachel Andrews, and other cricket team members appreciated the informative session, noting that it would help them maintain their health and fitness as they continue their international careers. The day concluded with refreshments and lively conversations among the inspiring women of Vanuatu’s sports community.
