Vanuatu’s Jane Alatoa was the star in their bronze match against the Solomon Islands at the MSG PM Cup in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Grabbing the Player of the Match Award, the midfielder was recognized for her key passes in creating scoring opportunities. She brought a surge of energy to the Vanuatu side when she came on in the second half.

With her in midfield, the Vanuatu side quickly transitioned to defense mode whenever they lost possession, as one of the commentators remarked during the match.

Alatoa has earned other Pacific awards, including the Pacific Player of the Tournament at the Four Nations Cup and the Golden Boot for being the top scorer in the OFC Women’s Champions League last year.

A giveaway by Vanuatu led to the Solomon Islands first goal in the 14{sup}th{/sup} minute. Teisika Rotoava took the ball forward and scored, unchallenged by any defenders.

Defender Nelly Kaltak equalised for Vanuatu in the 23 minute with a powerful low shot from distance.

Just after the water break, Solomon Islands’ Alma Gogony extended their lead to 2-1, following a failed initial attempt on goal.

A shot by captain Leimata Simon from the 18- yard box could have been the equalizer for Vanuatu, but it narrowly missed the goalpost.

The girls in yellow kept up the pressure, but the opponents managed to maintain their lead they headed into halftime.

Vanuatu started the second half with a changed lineup, bringing on Angeline Poida and Jane Alatoa.

The girls in green almost added another goal in the 50 minute after winning the ball from Vanuatu. A pass to Gogoni saw her drive forward towards the corner, take the ball away from the keeper who had come out, and shot towards the goal. A teammate’s header was cleared to another Solomon Islands ‘player, whose shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Several minutes later, captain Simon equalized for Vanuatu with a low drive from just outside the penalty area, assisted by jersey number 18.

In the 65{sup}th{/sup} minute, Simon netted her second making it 3-2 for Vanuatu, with an assist from Alatoa. Substitute Poida made it 4-3 for the team after sneaking from behind the Solomon Islands defense and scoring, following a pass from Alatoa.

Player of the Match Alatoa said they took their coach Robert Yalou’s message during the halftime break to heart, which helped them secure the result in the second half.

Yalou said despite the girls being tired after just a day’s rest from their semi-final clash, they managed to beat the Solomon Islands.

He added that they will take away valuable lessons from the tournament, as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
