“This victory is not just mine — it belongs to every woman, every young girl, every person living with special needs, and every voter who believes in inclusive leadership.”

Those were the words of Ms Jennifer Kausei, as unofficial results indicate she has been elected as the first-ever female city councillor from the Freshwota 3 community.

“I’m honoured and grateful for the trust the community has placed in me,” Kausei said.

The announcement sparked celebrations across Freshwota Zones 1 through 6, following a strong voter turnout.

According to the unofficial results, Ms Kausei of the Vanua’aku Pati (VP) leads with 793 votes. She is followed by Albertine Raplili from the Graon mo Jastis Pati with 553 votes, Theresiana Teilemb of the Union of Moderate Parties with 497 votes, Anne Marie Laure Laloyer of the Vanuatu Green Confederation with 430 votes, Marie Antoinette Nirua from the Reunification Movement for Change with 176 votes, and Melka Numbu of the Leaders Party of Vanuatu with 161 votes.

Kausei is an Australia Awards alumna, having graduated in 2003 from the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala campus in Fiji with a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in journalism, language, and literature.

She currently serves as the national coordinator liaising between the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Canberra, International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs), and partners including the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

Jonethy Jerety, a longtime community member from Freshwota 3, welcomed the outcome. He acknowledged the strong voter participation and described the election as a proud moment for the community.

“I want to thank all the voters from Freshwota 1 to Freshwota 6 who cast their votes. Kausei’s victory marks the first time our community has elected a woman to represent Freshwota 3 at the municipal level,” he said.

While Freshwota communities have consistently elected councillors in past elections, this is the first time Freshwota 3 will be represented by a female leader — a milestone for gender representation in local governance.

“Since municipal elections began, councillors have come from all six zones, but today, according to the unofficial results, our very own Freshwota 3 finally has a dedicated representative — and she is a woman,” Jerety added.

Widely recognised as a respected media personality, Kausei brings years of experience in public communication and community advocacy to her new role. Her election is being seen as a shift in attitudes toward women’s leadership in Port Vila.

As the official results are awaited, celebrations continue in parts of Freshwota. Many residents hope Kausei’s election will encourage more inclusive and community-focused policies at the municipal level.

Her term is expected to begin later this month, pending confirmation of results.
