A 23-year-old man has received a partially suspended sentence after pleading guilty to three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor on three consecutive days.

The Supreme Court heard that Issic Woro Worla took the victim to her parents’ house when both were drunk and had sex with her.

According to the verdict, the victim had an argument with her mother that day regarding the relation and was in an emotional state when the incident happened.

Judge Beverly Kanas Joshua set a sentence starting point of 5 years’ imprisonment, with an additional 7 months added for aggravating factors, bringing the total sentence to 5 years and 7 months.

Worla’s sentence was reduced by 25% for his guilty plea. Another 6 months’ reduction was given for mitigating factors, such as being a first time offender.

The defendant had a partner prior to the incident whom he had a child with, but are now separated.

He claimed that he loves the victim, and she said she loves him too.

Worla received a further 12 months’ reduction for time spent in custody, making his total sentence to 2 years, 3 months and 7 days.

Judge Joshua stated in the verdict that although he is a first-time offender, this offence is serious.

“…As your (Worla’s) is less than 3 years’ imprisonment. I am suspending this sentence in part,” she stated.

“You must serve 1-year imprisonment of your sentence. The remaining part of your sentence is 1 year 3 months 7 days. This is suspended for 1 year.

This means that you must not commit any offence in that 1-year period. If you do so, you will be arrested and the remaining part of your sentence will be activated, with the sentence of the new offence that you commit.”

The defendant was ordered to attend a rehabilitation programme offered by the Probation Services, and was given 14 days to appeal.
