The national women’s cricket team has a new captain, Rachel Andrew.
Her first mission is to lead the team at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier next week in Suva, Fiji, as they defend their regional title won in 2023.
The tournament is a crucial step on the road to the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, with only the winner progressing to the global qualifying stage.
Her leadership in this year’s tour to Papua New Guinea (PNG) impressed the coaching staff and VCA officials enough to hand her the role permanently.
“To be officially appointed to lead the team is an absolute honour,” Andrew said. “As captain, this qualifier is more than just a game – it’s about pride, responsibility, and giving everything for the team. We’re in this together and we are ready to give it our all.”
Her appointment marks a significant moment for Vanuatu cricket, with former long-time skipper Selina Solman, who missed the last tour due to work commitments in Australia, returning to the squad as vice-captain alongside Alvina Chilia.
Solman remains a vital part of the team’s leadership structure and has been instrumental in nurturing the next generation of players.
Head coach Joshua Rasu expressed confidence in the squad’s preparation and form heading into the high-stakes tournament.
“The ten of the squad who are based in Port Vila have prepared superbly over the past few months,” Rasu said.
“Combined with the likes of Rachel and Vicky Mansale coming straight from playing professionally in Darwin, and with Selina Solman back, we are in the best position we could be to give the tournament a real shake.”
Vanuatu, currently ranked 32nd in the global T20I standings, is also eyeing qualification for the new ICC Global Women’s Challenge Trophy, which will be awarded to the top-finishing team in the tournament, excluding PNG who are already in the next league tier for 2026–28.
The squad also includes emerging players like Melissa Velvel Faré, who has recently gained valuable experience playing in Adelaide.
The Vanuatu Cricket Association has confirmed the 14-player squad and Andrew is joined in leadership by vice-captain Alvina Chilia from Splashe Mele Bulls.
Returning to the side is veteran Solman of North Efate, who steps into a vice-captaincy role after previously captaining the national team.
The squad also features Melissa Velvel Faré, who brings international experience from her time with Kensington District Cricket Club in Adelaide, alongside her home club Indy Park Chiefs.
Anna Griffin and Mahina Tarimiala both represent North Efate Cricket Club, while Natalia Kakor, Susan Stephen, and Vanessa Vira strengthen the contingent from Indy Park Chiefs.
Valenta Langiatu, Rayline Ova, and Vicky Mansale all come from Splashe Mele Bulls, with Mansale also returning from a professional stint with Southern Districts in Darwin.
Nasimana Navaika of Tafea CC adds further depth to the bowling and fielding unit.
The team will be guided by head Rasu, with Faré also taking on the role of team manager, and Chris Laffan serving as high performance manager.
The Port Vila-based players will depart for Suva on Sunday, with Australia-based players arriving earlier.
Vanuatu’s campaign begins on Tuesday with a blockbuster opening match against world number 20 Indonesia.
