On the 4th of March 2024, Tom Lokin was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for Domestic Violence committed againts his de- facto partner. The decision was delivered by Justice Dudley Aru.

Facts of the case:

The offence was committed on April 2023 where the defendant swore at his partner, took a pipe and electric rope and whipped her with it, and cut her hair with a pair of scissors.

Sentence:

While the maximum punishment for such an offense is 5 years in jail or a fine of VT100,000, Lokin’s sentence was reduced due to some mitigating factors. Lokin has two young daughters, aged 10 and 5, and is the sole provider for his family. His skills in joinery and active community involvement were also considered in his favor.
