MP-Ngwele-questions-proposed-increase-in-MPs'-Allowance

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ambae Constituency, Jay Ngwele, has questioned the proposed increase in MP Allowances from VT5 million to VT10 million during oral question time in Parliament last week.

The proposal has sparked significant public backlash and criticism, with many questioning the timing and justification for the increase.

MP Ngwele questioned why the issue has not been more openly discussed in Parliament. He highlighted the disconnect between the public’s concerns about the allocation hike and the silence from other MPs on the issue.

In his statement to the Leader of Government Business, Jotham Napat, Ngwele pointed out that the bill has already been listed for debate and that all MPs have received it. He urged the government and Parliament to engage openly with the issue.

In response, MP Napat referred to Standing Order 41, which outlines the parliamentary procedure for addressing oral questions related to public matters under a Minister’s responsibility.

Prime Minister (PM), Charlot Salwai, also weighed in, providing additional context by referencing a motion from 2016 brought to Parliament by MP Sakias Lulu (Chairman of the Privileges Committee), which laid the foundation for the ongoing discussions.

He noted that the bill still requires approval from the Council of Ministers before it can be tabled in Parliament, indicating that the process is far from complete.
