The Vanuatu Family Health Association (VFHA) is now issuing referral cards for individuals under 25 years old to receive free sexual reproductive health check-ups at the clinic.

The VFHA health centre will be the first clinic in Vanuatu to provide referral cards for free clinical check-ups for youths.

VFHA Youth Officer Anika Passcal explained that they have recently adapted to the new referral system to encourage youths, especially minors, to come forward and get checked without any charge.

“We’re promoting this new referral card system to help youths access our free services for family planning, STI screening, and counselling,” she said.

“We understand that those aged 25 and over can afford to pay for our services, which have a VT500 fee, but it remains a challenge for our young unemployed individuals aged 13 to 25.

“During our awareness workshops in the communities, we will promote the new referral cards to raise awareness and provide a comfortable space for them to approach us.”

Officer Passcal mentioned that this initiative also allows the VFHA to register and monitor the number of youths who need medical check-ups but are too scared to visit the clinic.

She urges all youths under 25 to take advantage of the free check-ups.

“Your health is important, and you need to be aware of your health status,” said Passcal.

“Regular check-ups are vital to help you prevent illness in the future. Young people engaging in sexual intercourse from ages 10 to 25 are at a higher risk of cervical cancer, which is why it is crucial for us to carry out awareness and promote the new referral card registry.”

Located behind the old police station in town, the VFHA works closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to provide services and champion sexual and reproductive health and rights for all individuals in normal and humanitarian situations.
