Pikinini Playtime and Vanua Leadership College have opened their first Deaf Dormitory, paving the way for more inclusive higher education in Vanuatu. This new development gives deaf students, who have long faced barriers to education, a place where they can live, learn, and connect with peers who share similar experiences.

The Deaf Dormitory, scheduled to open in the coming month, will offer separate male and female dorms and will be staffed full-time by trained special needs professionals who live on-site. This setup aims to provide a safe and supportive environment while also building a strong sense of community for deaf students who often feel isolated in mainstream settings.

Education at both schools is entirely free for students with disabilities. Parents or caretakers are only asked to contribute a small weekly fee of VT3,000 to help cover meals, maintenance, and hostel needs—making the opportunity affordable for families across different backgrounds.

The initiative continues the schools’ efforts to provide welcoming spaces for all learners, regardless of their abilities. It marks an important step forward for disability-inclusive education in Vanuatu.

Parents and caretakers of deaf children are encouraged to get in touch and take up this opportunity. With dedicated support and a caring environment, the new Deaf Dormitory is ready to welcome students into a more connected and hopeful future.
