Students, parents, and teachers are preparing to return to school after more than a month of festive holidays.

Government schools normally start a new academic year in early February, but this year they are starting early as there will be four terms.

The Council of Ministers (COM) approved a four-term academic calendar for government schools this year, similar to what the private schools have been doing, with Term I classes starting on January 26th.

Parents are now starting to save for their children’s tuition fees, uniforms and textbooks, with students making the most of their final weeks of relaxation.

Term I will run from January 25th to April 17th, Term II from April 26th to July 17th, Term III from August 10th to October 12th, and Term IV from October 12th to December 11th. Term I and Term II will each have 12 weeks, while Term III and IV will each have eight weeks.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) explained that this adjustment aims to ensure better curriculum coverage, more balanced workloads for teachers and students, and adequate rest breaks throughout the year.

“The three weeks long break will also give time for extra-curricular activities such as Vanuatu National Secondary School Games, and National Arts festival. Teachers could also capitalize on this time to attend to capacity,” stated the MoET.

The ministry has also assured parents and guardians that the total development fees payable each year will not increase because of change from three to four terms.

“Instead, the total development fees and boarding fees will be spread across four terms instead of three. This means that the total annual amount remains the same, but the payment will be divided into four smaller instalments to align with the new school calendar,” the MoET explained in a statement.

Primary and secondary teachers and principals are instructed to be in their schools on time to ensure there is no lost to learning and teaching time.

Meanwhile, the MoET conveyed yesterday that this year’s national examination results will not be broadcasted like in previous years due to budget constraints. The results will be shared on the ministry’s Facebook page and display on all provincial education offices.

Scholarship results will be released following Year 13 results, according to the ministry.
