The Vanuatu Government has appointed a new Education Attaché in Fiji to address matters related to student welfare and academic performance.

She is Serah Vurobaravu Liki, the former National Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Coordinator at the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET). She replaced Thomas Butu, whose contract ended.

Mrs. Liki holds a Bachelor’s degree in ECCE and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of the South Pacific (USP), as well as a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management from the Australia Pacific Training Coalition.

She has over 30 years of experience in education, including 19 years as a primary school teacher, three years as an ECCE programmer, and nine years as ECCE Coordinator.

She has expertise in educational leadership, policy implementation, teacher professional development, and student support.

The new Education Attaché will work closely with tertiary institutions to address gaps and discrepancies related to academic performance, student welfare and counselling, and compliance and reporting requirements.

She will support scholarship staff with the travel logistics of students to Fiji, ensure they are properly registered, provide counselling, particularly after mid-semester results, and complete the student handbook.

Her responsibilities also include developing and implementing a schedule of visits to students across different institutions in Fiji, and verifying student visas with Fiji immigration.

Her role goes beyond addressing the welfare of Vanuatu students abroad. She will contribute to strengthening bilateral cooperation in education, requiring a high level of diplomacy, cultural sensitivity, and representation.

The new Education Attaché was introduced to scholarship students during a pre-departure briefing last week.

The Vanuatu High Commission to Fiji welcomed Mrs. Liki yesterday, stating she commenced work in anticipation of the arrival of student cohorts over the next few weeks.

The High Commission also noted that with the arrival of Mrs. Liki, the professional diplomatic staff at the Suva Mission are all female and headed by a female High Commissioner, which was hailed as an incredible development and a first for women in diplomacy in Vanuatu.
