Shefa-health-trains-34-vhws-in-mental-health-and-disability

The SHEFA Health Village Health Worker (VHW) Programme concluded its week-long training on Mental Health and Disability yesterday at the Ministry of Health (MoH). The training, which took place over the past week, saw 34 participants from across the SHEFA Health Province take part and graduate.

SHEFA Health Promotion Officer and VHW Programme Coordinator, Eron Sammy, explained that the training aimed to qualify VHWs, including those from the Vanuatu Police Force’s Crime Unit in SHEFA and Port Vila, with the skills to better address mental health issues and disabilities in their communities. “The training develops our VHWs’ knowledge on identifying and assisting individuals with disabilities or mental health conditions within their respective communities,” Sammy said.

The training was organised by the Public Health Programme (PHP), which handles diseases like malaria and tuberculosis, in collaboration with the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Unit. It provided VHWs with vital information on treating malaria and effectively communicating with patients who test positive for various illnesses.

Additionally, the Health Information System (HIS) was involved in the training, focusing on teaching VHWs how to accurately record and report severe cases to doctors and manage the spread of illnesses within communities. “The HIS team supported the training by providing guidance on patient identification and information sharing,” Sammy added.

The MoH thanked the facilitators from the Mind Care Unit and to all the health workers from SHEFA for their participation. The SHEFA Health Provincial Management extended its appreciation to the Australian Government for its financial support in sponsoring this vital training.
