The Vanuatu Teachers Union (VTU) is calling on the government to address the suspension of school principals by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) due to the current industrial action.

Secretary General (SG) of VTU, Jonathan Yona, said they are now ready to sign a new agreement as discussed with the new ministers of education and finance, but the suspension of principals has created a new issue.

“We (VTU) can sign the agreement anytime at anytime, but the employer is firing workers. Unless the principals are reinstated, the agreement will not be signed,” he told the Daily Post yesterday.

“With the situation dragging on, it’s not our problem but TSC to blame.”

SG Yona said they are aware over 10 school principals in Port Vila have been suspended without salary relating to the industrial action. He urged all of them to bring their suspension letters to VTU so it can help address the issue.

He stressed that TSC should suspend all members of VTU rather than just some principals in Port Vila, calling it a lack of worth ethics.

The Daily Post understands that the principals are suspended for a common reason: closing their schools and neglecting the welfare and educational interests of their students, as stated in their letters.

Yona said during the strike, students are sent home for safety because teachers are not present. He said teachers’ rights, like those of students, are human rights and should be prioritised.

He said they have completed their verification against the amount submitted by VTU and are ready to sign the agreement. Yona said over 90% of data for the claims submitted by TSC them was incorrect.

“We have our hard evidence to prove them wrong. The total figure and a new proposed plan are ready for us to sign,” he said.

VTU has proposed a payment plan for the government to start sorting out the claims at an amount of VT5 billion, said the SG.

He added that they have approached the minister regarding the suspension of the teachers.
