The Vanuatu Teachers Union (VTU) will end its strike once the first payment of over VT800 million from the VT4 billion approved by the Council of Ministers (COM) is received by its members.

This was conveyed by Jonathan Yona, Secretary General (SG) of the VTU.

He said they are preparing a list for the VT820 million to be sent to the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) as part of the payment plan, which will be tabled at the next COM meeting.

In its urgent meeting on Monday, COM urged the teachers to resume classes immediately, assuring them that the government is committed to settling their claims.

Prime Minister (PM) Charlot Salwai said that while the government may not be able to settle all their claims this year, it will include them in future budgets.

He also mentioned that COM has approved the establishment of a working committee, consisting of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), MoET, and the Department of Finance and Treasury (DoFT), within six months to review each case individually and have them verified by the Office of the Attorney General. The government will only settle claims that are legal.

SG Yona said that VTU members will wait for the first payment to be deposited into their accounts before resuming duties.

He noted that past agreements have not been honoured, so making the first payment will reassure the teachers to return to work.

While awaiting their first payment, the number of suspensions by TSC continues to rise, with nearly 200 reported as of yesterday.

PM Salwai said that COM did not discuss the suspensions as this matter falls under TSC, the employer for all government teachers.
