Vanuatu women’s beach volleyball duo, Sherysyn Toko and Majabelle Lawac, made an impressive start at the Samila Open on Sunday, securing a straight-sets victory on the opening day of competition.

Competing under the guidance of head coach Manu Maki, the duo took to the sand in Pool G of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Beach Tour event currently underway in Songkhla, Thailand.

Representing Team Vanuatu, Toko and Lawac delivered a commanding performance against Singapore’s 23rd-seeded pair.

The Ni-Vanuatu athletes defeated Grace and Lee X.E.V in straight sets, winning 2–0 (21–8, 21–15) in a confident opening match.

The victory places Vanuatu in a strong early position in Pool G. However, the pair later lost to China’s second-ranked team in their next match.

Prior to departure from Port Vila, Coach Maki who stepped into the role in place of Miller Pata due to family commitments expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and mindset.

He highlighted the extensive work done in training, noting that alongside physical conditioning, the players have placed strong emphasis on mental fitness.

“The girls have been training hard and are determined to perform well and collect valuable points to improve their rankings,” Maki said.

The Samila Open, now in its 25th edition, is part of the AVC Beach Tour and continues to attract top teams from across the region.

With 25 teams competing, Toko and Lawac are aiming to build on their current seventh-place ranking and deliver a standout performance.

The tournament also marks the pair’s third international outing this year, as they continue to gain valuable experience and momentum on the global stage.
