Port Vila, Vanuatu, will be the stage for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup EAP Qualifier from September 1 to 8.
This event holds a crucial spot for one team to secure their entry into the Global Qualifier, a vital step towards the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The participating teams include Cook Islands, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and the host nation, Vanuatu. Despite challenges posed by natural disasters earlier this year, Vanuatu eagerly welcomes these teams, aiming to promote tourism and support the local economy.
Papua New Guinea, defending champions, will strive to maintain their regional dominance in a single-round robin format. This event marks the revival of the ICC Women’s Qualifier in the region since 2019 due to the global pandemic.
Running parallel to the cricket action, the ICC introduces the 100% Cricket Leadership Program.
This initiative focuses on athletes, commentators, and coaches from the seven participating nations, supported by the Australian Government’s PacificAus Sports.
Facilitated by former Australian cricketers and media personalities, the program seeks to enhance sports knowledge and skills within the EAP region.
A unique aspect of the program involves a Women’s Health Education session, addressing vital topics such as women’s health and menstrual cycles within the cricket landscape.
Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) CEO Tim Cutler expressed gratitude for the opportunity to host the qualifying event despite recent disruptions.
The VCA’s national women’s cricket team, under new coach Joshua Rasu, looks forward to representing their country with distinction.
EAP Regional Development Manager Rob Gomm highlighted the excitement surrounding this qualifier’s return after four years. Debutants across teams bring fresh competition, while the concurrent Leadership Program aims to elevate athletes’ off-field skills and leadership capability.
All matches will be available to view free of charge at the Vanuatu Cricket Grounds and via live streaming on icc.tv.
This event not only promises thrilling cricket but also contributes to the growth and empowerment of women in sports in the EAP region.
