A new Year 9 curriculum will be introduced from 2025 across Vanuatu, providing a modern and high-quality education for all students.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is delivering targeted training for teachers to build essential skills and familiarity with the curriculum.

Supported by the New Zealand Government, the training is equipping teachers with an understanding of the new syllabus, including its structure, content and connections to Year 7-10 learnings. Teachers will also become proficient in using teacher guides, understanding aligned outcomes and applying available resources to enhance their teaching.

A statement from MoET stated that “the training is highly practical, with teachers participating in collaborative lesson planning, and using the syllabus and teacher guides to design effective lessons that are tailored to their school needs and ensure they are ready for students.

“Training has already been delivered in TORBA and MALAMPA Provinces, including Ambrym and Paama, although some sessions were rescheduled due to disruptions from the teachers’ strike. Training for the PENAMA, SANMA, MALAMPA, SHEFA, and TAFEA Provinces will be completed in early 2025.

“Alongside the training, ahead of implementation of the new curriculum, each school will receive a Year 9 syllabus, teacher guide, and a USB drive containing digital resources for the Year 7-9 curriculum.

“The new curriculum drives forward Vanuatu’s vision for equal access to quality education for all students.

“In collaboration with communities, schools, and development partners, MoET is committed to realising Vanuatu’s National Sustainable Development Plan (2016-2030) in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“This commitment guarantees equal access to quality education through well-managed schools, reflecting MoET’s dedication to empowering educators and strengthening Vanuatu’s education system.”
