The Director of the Department of Women’s Affairs, Rothina Noka, has delivered a series of national interventions on behalf of the Minister of Justice and Community Services at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) Women Leaders Meeting underway in Fiji.

The meeting brought together women ministers, leaders and senior government officials from across the Pacific to discuss regional priorities and collective action for gender equality and social inclusion. Director Noka reaffirmed Vanuatu’s commitment to advancing gender equality, improving women’s health and wellbeing, eliminating gender-based violence and strengthening disability inclusion.

She highlighted Vanuatu’s progress in addressing gender-based violence, including findings from the recently launched Second National Prevalence Study on Women’s Relationships and Family Life, which recorded a nine percent reduction in physical and sexual violence by husbands or intimate partners since the country’s first survey in 2009.

She also mentioned ongoing efforts to strengthen survivor support services through the upcoming Gender-Based Violence Multi-Service Delivery Protocol and its leadership role in advancing gender equality initiatives within the Melanesian region.

The director also emphasised the importance of investing in women’s health and wellbeing, noting the challenges faced by women and girls across the Pacific, including limited access to healthcare services, climate-related impacts, food insecurity and the growing shortage of healthcare professionals.

On disability inclusion, she welcomed the draft Refreshed Pacific Framework for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and reaffirmed Vanuatu’s commitment to ensuring persons with disabilities are fully included in all aspects of development. She highlighted ongoing work to strengthen disability legislation and improve disability data systems to support evidence-based planning and service delivery.

Mrs. Noka reiterated Vanuatu’s commitment to working with Pacific leaders and development partners to create a safer, healthier and more inclusive future for all.

The Ministry of Justice, Youth and Community Services acknowledged the valuable support provided by the Vanuatu High Commission in Fiji and the student attaché who assisted the Vanuatu delegation throughout the meeting.

The meeting continues this week in Suva, bringing together Pacific leaders to strengthen regional cooperation and advance the rights and wellbeing of women, girls and persons with disabilities across the Blue Pacific.
