vanuatu-family-health-association-records-23,680-flu-cases

The Vanuatu Family Health Association (VFHA) has recorded 23,680 influenza cases since 2023.

VFHA Data Officer Serah Nango said this represents a big increase in influenza cases over the past year. In 2023, the VFHA recorded 22,380 cases of influenza, while in 2024, they recorded a total of 1,300 cases.

Nango explained that influenza, commonly known as the flu, poses a higher risk to certain groups.

“Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, children under five years old, individuals over 65 years of age, and those with chronic medical conditions such as HIV/AIDS, asthma, heart and lung diseases, and diabetes are particularly vulnerable,” she said.

She emphasised that individuals in these high-risk categories should seek immediate medical treatment if they exhibit symptoms of the flu.

The flu can lead to complications such as ear infections, diarrhoea, vomiting, and chest pain.

For confirmation, Nango recommended the rapid flu test as the preferred method. She also noted that influenza spreads rapidly through droplets from coughs or sneezes and can be transmitted via contaminated hands.

To prevent the spread of influenza, Nango advised several precautionary measures, including regular hand washing, avoiding large crowds during flu outbreaks, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home if experiencing a fever for at least 24 hours.
