Vanuatu-15th-Triennial-pre-forum-outcome-statement

In a significant move towards addressing gender inequality in Vanuatu, Sista and CARE International in Vanuatu brought together 52 participants from 24 ni-Vanuatu civil society organizations on July 16, 2024, to develop a comprehensive Outcome Statement. This statement aims to supplement the review of the Beijing Platform for Action report, led by the Ministry of Justice through the Department of Women’s Affairs, and contribute to key regional and international discussions, including the 15th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women, the 8th Meeting of Pacific Ministers for Women in July 2024, and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in March 2025.

The Outcome Statement emphasizes several key recommendations to address gender inequality in Vanuatu. Firstly, the government must strengthen the implementation and monitoring of existing laws and policies, particularly those supporting women’s and girls’ rights. Secondly, efforts to promote gender equality should be inclusive, valuing diversity across geographical locations, religious and political affiliations, age, and disability. Finally, significant investment is needed in women’s health and reproductive rights to overcome cultural barriers, stigma, and inadequate health infrastructure, ensuring better access to essential health services for women.
The Outcome Statement calls for continued advocacy and dialogue to address the persistent themes of gender inequality. The collaborative efforts of civil society and government are crucial in creating a safer and more equitable society for all women and girls in Vanuatu.
