Vanuatu has secured its first-ever victory at the ICC Women’s Challenge Trophy, defeating higher-ranked Nepal by 22 runs in Kigali on Friday.

The breakthrough win follows a difficult start to the tournament, with Vanuatu suffering losses to Rwanda, Italy, and the United States.

The result marks a significant milestone for the young Vanuatu side, currently ranked 30th in the world, against a more experienced Nepal team ranked 21st.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Vanuatu posted 97 for 5 from their 20 overs. Opener Valenta Langiatu laid a solid foundation with a composed 42 off 50 balls, anchoring the innings.

Nasimana Navaika contributed 18 runs in the middle overs, while late efforts from Susan Stephen and Gillian Chilia helped the team bat through their full allocation.

Defending a modest total, Vanuatu’s bowlers delivered a disciplined and determined performance.

Early breakthroughs with the new ball placed Nepal under immediate pressure, and consistent wicket-taking combined with sharp fielding ensured the opposition never recovered.

Vanessa Vira led the attack with outstanding figures of 3 for 11, while Navaika capped an excellent all-round display with 3 for 17, including two impressive caught-and-bowled dismissals.

Selina Solman also claimed two wickets as Nepal were bowled out for 75 in 15.3 overs. Nepal showed brief resistance through Samjhana Khadka, who scored 24, but regular wickets ensured the required run rate remained out of reach.

Navaika was named Player of the Match for her impactful contributions with both bat and ball.

In Sunday’s fixture, the first of the second round-robin matches, Vanuatu fell just short of another upset, losing to hosts Rwanda by three runs in a closely contested encounter.

Langiatu again starred with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 71 from 63 deliveries while chasing Rwanda’s total of 133 for 5.

She brought Vanuatu within reach by hitting a six off the fourth ball of the final over, leaving just four runs needed, but the side was unable to find the boundary in the closing deliveries.

Captain Rachel Andrew added 23 runs, while Stephen, promoted to open, scored a quick 11, including two boundaries against Rwanda’s pace attack.

Earlier in the match, Solman was the standout with the ball, taking 2 for 20 from her four overs, while Navaika again contributed with 2 for 31.

Despite the narrow defeat, Vanuatu’s performances signal growing confidence and competitiveness as they continue their campaign against higher-ranked opposition.
