It would cost around VT4 billion to rebuild schools damaged by the devastating earthquake that struck near Port Vila three weeks ago.

The Director of Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), John Gideon, confirmed that they have submitted the estimated figure to the Recovery Emergency Centre (ROC).

He said Malapoa College alone accounts for about half of the cost.

Director Gideon said the total cost covers repairs for the ministry’s building and the Examination Unit, which were also damaged.

He conveyed that their assessments have confirmed 45 schools, mostly in Port Vila, were damaged, with nearly 80 unsafe buildings and seven needing further structural assessment. More than 70 other buildings are damaged but are safe to use.

The buildings that need further assessment are at the Vanuatu Institute of Technology (VIT), Freswota Bilingual School, and Malapoa College.

MoET conducted its assessments in three stages after the earthquake. The first involved non-building technicians who identified damaged buildings using three color codes, which helped engineers directly target the schools for further assessment, said Director Gideon.

The status of all the damaged schools were presented to school principals from Efate in a meeting yesterday.

Director Gideon said the meeting was an opportunity for the principals to discuss options to resume classes despite damages, such as arranging temporary learning spaces and online learning.

School will resume for the 2025 academic year on February 3.

The Acting Director of Education Services, Jean Jacques Tari, told the principals to submit their list of damaged resources to the Shefa Principal Education Officer, including their Response Plan to the ministry before tomorrow.

The principals were reminded of the importance of building according to the standards facilitated by the Facility Unit of the ministry to withstand cyclones and earthquakes. They were told to consult the unit if they want to carry out some minor repairs to their damaged classrooms.
