Women are making their mark on futsal in Luganville, leading the way as referees despite challenges, said the President of the Chapuis Sports Development Program (CSDP), Stephan Jimmy.

Since the program began in 2023, CSDP has trained referees in Luganville, particularly in Chapuis. Today, eight referees remain active, with the majority being women.

“These referees face challenges like limited uniforms and training facilities, but we continue our work with trust and commitment,” Jimmy said. “The players have accepted our decisions without any backlash.”

Jimmy said the program still needs support, particularly for referee coaching and community awareness initiatives. “As the youngest president referee, I need help to make decisions, visit communities, and promote referees’ work,” he said.

He also highlighted growing sponsorship support.

“Since 2023, clubs have received backing from sponsors, which we’re proud of. This year, 2026, the Department of Livestock has stepped in to recognize outstanding referees. Top-performing referees will receive a live animal as a form of prize, reflecting their dedication and contribution to the sport,” he said.

Jimmy encouraged clubs to bring in new participants.

“With this sponsorship, it’s a positive start that could inspire other companies to support referees in the years ahead,” he added
