A new youth-led initiative aimed at strengthening academic support and mentoring opportunities for students across Vanuatu was officially launched this week with the establishment of the Yumi Lanem Association.
The non-profit organisation, founded by a group of motivated students and volunteers, was introduced during a ceremony at YumiWork attended by parents, teachers, community members, and partner organisations.
Yumi Lanem Association was created in response to the challenges many young people continue to face in their academic journey. Its founders hope to provide practical tools and guidance to help students succeed.
“Our goal is to give young people the tools they need to succeed and believe in their potential,” said Steeve Molkis, Vice President of the association, during the launch. “With Yumi Lanem, we want to create a space for support, motivation, and opportunity for everyone.”
The association is led by President Ophelie Molkis, alongside Vice President Steeve Molkis and a committed team of volunteers. Its mission is to assist students who are struggling academically or seeking to improve their performance.
Beginning in 2026, Yumi Lanem will roll out a range of programs, including tutoring sessions for secondary and university students, mentorship schemes linking youth with experienced volunteers, and practical workshops on study methods, time management, and career guidance.
The organisation has received an initial start-up fund of VT500,000, secured through a pitching competition funded by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) and supported by the Charitable Association V-Lab. Organisers say this funding will allow Yumi Lanem to maintain consistent, year-round programs accessible to students in need.
The founders believe these programs will improve academic performance, strengthen student retention, boost motivation, and increase self-confidence among young people.
The launch has been warmly welcomed by families and educational institutions, with several potential partners already expressing interest in collaborating through awareness campaigns, school-based initiatives, educational events, and the provision of learning resources.
The initiative reflects a growing community focus on supporting youth and creating pathways for academic and professional development.
Yumi Lanem Association has also called for community engagement, inviting young people, parents, institutions, and businesses to support its work.
“Together, yumi buildim up wan successful young community blong yumi long Vanuatu,” President Ophelie Molkis said in closing.
