The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) welcomed all students, teachers, and staff back to school for the first day of the 2025 academic year yesterday.

The MoET recognises the resilience and determination of students and educators as they embark on another year of learning and growth, especially in the wake of the disastrous earthquake of 17 December 2024.

Despite the challenges brought by the earthquake, the MoET is pleased to confirm that all schools across the country are opening, with some adjustments in place for those that sustained damage.

The safety of teachers and students remains its highest priority, with the Ministry engaging qualified engineers to conduct thorough assessments of all schools to ensure they are safe for use.

The MoET extends its gratitude to its partners – the Australian Government, UNICEF, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), Red Cross and World Vision – for their invaluable support in ensuring all the schools open as scheduled.

The Ministry urges parents and students in Efate to be vigilant as they return to school. While all operational buildings have been confirmed safe, some schools have made changes to continue providing education.

The MoET appreciates the cooperation of families and communities in ensuring that students can resume their studies with confidence and security.

Director General (DG) of the MoET, Bergmans Iati, emphasised the importance of collaboration in maintaining uninterrupted learning.

“I encourage all communities, parents, and schools to work together to ensure the continuity of education, students’ safety, and overall wellbeing,” he said.

“We have faced challenges, but by working together, we can provide our students with the best possible environment for growth and learning.

“Let us continue to support each other for the success and happiness of our children.”

As the new academic year begins, the MoET encourages all students to embrace the opportunities ahead.

Schools are focused on ensuring students’ academic success while supporting their mental health and wellbeing as they transition back to normal routines.

The MoET wishes all students the very best for 2025, encouraging them to embrace a year filled with learning, growth, and success.
