A historic agreement was signed yesterday between the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) and Interchange Limited (ICL), marking a new era for women’s cricket in the country.

The partnership seals ICL as the platinum sponsor for women’s cricket, demonstrating a strong commitment to the growth and development of the sport.

The official signing took place at the Holiday Inn Resort in Port Vila, where ICL’s General Manager Niall Downey and VCA Chief Executive Officer formalized the agreement.

The partnership will fund key cricket programs, including the newly established VCA Academy, which will be rebranded as the Interchange Academy.

This academy will focus on training and development for talented athletes from Santo, Tanna, and Port Vila, under the guidance of a high-performance manager.

Another major milestone from this partnership will see for the first time, an U19 women’s team will be established and will compete in international tournaments starting next year.

Representing the government as a shareholder with the ICL, was Cherol Ala, Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office, who praised both parties for their commitment.

“Cricket is a growing sport in Vanuatu, especially among women.

“This partnership not only promotes the sport but also creates a safe space for women to come together, share experiences, and engage in positive dialogue,” she said.

She acknowledged the role of ICL in providing much-needed funding to support cricket activities in the provinces of Sanma and Tafea.

VCA CEO Tim Cutler emphasized the critical role that cricket and sports play in the nation’s development, particularly in rebuilding efforts post-December’s earthquake.

He highlighted the longstanding success of the Island Cricket Program, which has been running for over 12 years, and how this new partnership will further boost its impact.

“In Tanna, 15 women’s island cricket teams have already been established with support from the Australian government.

“This partnership with ICL will provide additional assistance to ensure the program continues to thrive,” Cutler said.

Cutler also underscored the importance of Interchange Limited to Vanuatu, noting its role in managing the country’s internet infrastructure, including a new connection to New Caledonia.

“We are honored to partner with Interchange, a company that plays such a crucial role in the connectivity of our nation,” he added.

Interchange Limited General Manager Niall Downey emphasized the company’s commitment to the growth of women’s sports in Vanuatu.

“Cricket is the highest-ranked sport in Vanuatu, with two of our women’s teams among the top thirty in the world.

We see this as an opportunity not only to support women in sports but also to aid in post-earthquake recovery efforts and bring smiles back to the people of Vanuatu,” Downey said.

He also expressed confidence in the long-term success of this collaboration, highlighting how sports serve as a unifying force in society.
