The Vodafone TAFEA Boxing Tournament 2024- 2nd edition concluded on Tuesday at the Lamenu stadium in Lenakel, Tanna Island.

Vodafone has obtained approval from the Vanuatu Boxing Federation to organize this event in Tanna.

The primary objective is to promote the Boxing in Tafea, addressing the decline in interest in this sport across many of our islands, while also educating the youth about the updated rule of the sports that most fighters in Tanna do not know about.

The Secretary of Tafea Boxing League, Alexis Kapalu said “the event featured approximately 170 male boxers representing 17 clubs, alongside the participation of 6 female boxers from 3 clubs; Nauten Club, Lasborn Club and South Sea Club.”

The boxers participate in 19 elimination bouts, leading to the quarterfinals, which begin with the light flyweight category at 49kg and extend to the light heavyweight category at 90kg for males. In the women’s competition, participants are limited to a weight category of under 60kg.

The three-days competition ends with the following awards:

First prize: 150 000vuv – Nivrainitata Boxing Club

Second prize: 100 000vuv- Nauten Boxing Club

Third prize: 50 000vuv, which is distributed among five clubs due to closely matched points.

The clubs receiving this shared prize are Nafe Boxing Club, Army Boxing Club, Namalmal Boxing Club, South Sea Boxing Club and Lasborn Boxing Club.

The tribute for Best Male Boxer is awarded to Charlie Junior and has maintained this distinction since Vodafone 1st edition of Tafea Boxing Tournament back in 2021, while the title for Best Female Boxer is conferred upon Frankliz Tao, both of whom represent the Nauten.

Alexis noted that Nauten has produced numerous champions in boxing since the era of the New Hebrides, beginning with the Welterweight Champion Alexis Yolou in 1970.

Following his retirement, he transitioned into coaching, mentoring Philip Kating, known as the Vanuatu Boxing Golden Boy, as well as Tiger Shark in the late 1970s.

This legacy originates from the Nauten Boxing Club.

“Despite the finishing in second place according to the officials’ ranking across various weight categories, the club remained until the establishment of the Lasborn Club, which secured third place alongside other clubs,” said Kapalu.
