The Ministry of Justice, Youth and Community Services (MOJYCS) is calling on members of the community to help amplify the voices and leadership of people with disabilities. As part of country-wide activities for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), the Ministry aims to raise awareness about the rights, dignity and wellbeing of people with disabilities.

The global celebration is a day that invites individuals, communities and nations to recognise and promote inclusion at every level of society.

This year’s campaign, organised by the MOJYCS, will be held in Pango Area Council, SHEFA Province, and extended across all six provinces of Vanuatu. The event will feature activities involving people with disability alongside their communities, encouraging participation and dialogue around disability inclusion.

Provincial celebrations will take place in SHEFA (Pango and Pele), TAFEA (North Tanna), MALAMPA (South Malekula), SANMA (Malo), TORBA (Ureparapara) and PENAMA (West Ambae).

This public celebration invites communities to join, learn and carry forward messages about accessibility, respect and inclusion. The focus is on advocating for accessible infrastructure and services; promoting respectful communication and the right to information; and encouraging participation of people with disabilities in churches, communities, provincial councils and government spaces.

Disability advocate Frida Willie said the whole community benefits when everyone is included. “When a person with a disability takes the lead, they lead with courage because they face many barriers. When you go into a community, you see a chief, a woman leader, a youth leader, but no person with a disability leading. If there is a person with a disability leading alongside other leaders, then the community becomes complete with the idea of inclusion,” said Ms Willie.
