The Vanuatu Beach Volleyball Federation will send four pairs to compete at the Australian Youth Beach Volleyball Championships in Coolangatta Beach, Queensland, Australia.

Scheduled from March 9-12, the championship will see eight young athletes represent Vanuatu against other junior athletes from Australia.

This march the largest U-18 squad the country has ever sent to the event. During last year’s debut appearance at the championships, Vanuatu was represented by just one pair.

The team includes Camrine Obed, Esther Atnelo, Monique John, Julie Nomokina, Amelie Gitton, Rihanna Shem, Carol Suvtekmag and Jeniffer Tom.

The athletes will compete across the U16, U17 and U18 age categories.

The expansion to four pairs highlights the rapid development and growing depth of youth beach volleyball in the country.

In preparation for the tournament, the girls have been training three days per week, focusing on warm-ups, technical drills, blocking and serving.

Coaches said the increased intensity and structured sessions are already producing encouraging results.

Coach Manu Maki said international competition is vital for the players’ development.

“It is good for the girls to get as much exposure as possible. Traveling to compete against some of Australia’s best players is a good way to start off,” he said.

“We want our girls to keep improving and getting our scores up.

“We want to represent our nation well.”

Among the squad is 18-year-old Jenifer Tom, daughter of national Head Coach Miller Pata, who has expressed pride and confidence in the team.

She believes the players will make a strong impression in their first major international outing as a larger group.

The team departs on March 8 for the competition.

Vanuatu Beach Volleyball Federation thanked all its sponsors and supporters who have made the trip possible, and asked the nation to keep the team in their prayers.
