The Vanuatu women’s cricket team delivered another determined performance at the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy, but fell to a narrow four-wicket loss against Italy—their second defeat of the tournament.

Batting first in Kigali, Rwanda, Vanuatu posted a competitive 114 for 6, showing resilience and composure throughout the innings.

Nasimana Navaika led the scoring with an impressive 36 runs, supported by Valenta Langiatu with 20 and captain Rachel Andrew, who added 14 to help build a solid total.

Defending the target, Vanuatu’s bowling unit kept the pressure on Italy in a tightly contested match. Vanessa Vira produced a standout performance, taking 2 wickets for 13 runs in her four overs, including a maiden.

Natalia Kakor also delivered a disciplined spell, conceding just 21 runs while maintaining control, also including a maiden over.

Italy eventually chased down the target in the closing stages, sealing victory with just three balls remaining.

Despite the result, Vanuatu’s strong all-round display highlighted their continued development and growing competitiveness on the international stage.

The tournament is one of several new initiatives introduced by the International Cricket Council to increase match exposure for Associate Member women’s teams, alongside events such as the Emerging Nations Trophy, which held its inaugural edition last November.

Vanuatu will next face the United States of America, with the team remaining optimistic after strong individual performances in matches against Rwanda and Italy. Despite back-to-back defeats, the squad believes it has the potential to improve and deliver stronger results in the upcoming fixtures.

The tournament, run from 18 April to 1 May at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium.
