In the midst of disaster recovery, ActionAid Vanuatu has brought hope and relief to many families, particularly new mothers, through their targeted distribution of pregnancy and baby kits. Among those deeply impacted by this support is Sandrina Ruben, whose story reflects the profound impact of these initiatives.

Ms Ruben, a mother from Mele Maat, received one of the pregnancy kits during a recent distribution, she shared her experience with heartfelt gratitude, revealing how the kit arrived at the perfect time. “They gave us the pregnancy kit, and I was so happy,” she said. “We are in the middle of a disaster, and I had some baby stuff, but not much. When they gave us the baby kit, I was delighted.”

The very night Ruben received the kit, she went into labour and delivered her baby safely, she expressed her gratitude for the timely assistance, noting how the kit relieved her financial burden. “I’m thankful they gave us these things. After that, I managed to go to the hospital and deliver my baby. I’m grateful that I didn’t need to spend money on baby stuff. I don’t know how long it will last, but I know it will give me time to save up and get back on our feet again after this disastrous time.”

Ruben also reflected on her faith during these challenging times. “I want to thank God for protecting me. I was overdue, but maybe it was because of the tragic time.

“It was like everything waited for the right moment to return to normal so I could deliver my baby.”

Rosette Kalmet, Programme Manager for ActionAid Vanuatu, explained the broader context of the initiative. “Part of our programme for the distribution included providing dignity kits to mothers. For pregnant women, we also gave out mother and infant kits with everything needed to look after a newborn baby,” she said.

Kalmet recounted Ruben’s story as a testament to the programme’s success. “We had this wonderful story about a pregnant lady who was overdue. On the same day we distributed the mother and infant kit, she went into labour and delivered her baby that night.”
