As Vanuatu prepares for the snap general election on 16 January 2025, Transparency International Vanuatu (TIV) has issued key reminders for voters and leaders.

TIV urged all eligible voters to exercise their right to vote. “Your vote is your right to choose your candidates for the National Parliament,” TIV stated, adding that many sacrificed for this right, which remains denied to others in the Pacific.

The organisation emphasised the importance of voting independently, warning against bribery and undue influence. “Do not vote for people who give you money, food, or promises. Do not let chiefs or village leaders dictate your choice. Vote freely and according to your own decision,” TIV said.

Voters were encouraged to prioritise candidates who demonstrate transparency, integrity, and concern for their communities. TIV reiterated that accepting or offering money or goods during campaigning constitutes bribery and is illegal.

“When casting your vote, only you and God will know your choice. It is your right, and you do not have to disclose it to anyone,” the statement continued.

TIV also urged voters to question former Members of Parliament about the use of Responsibility and Constituency Allowances. “If these funds were misused for personal gain, do not vote them back into Parliament. Corruption robs communities of essential services,” TIV stated.

To leaders, TIV stressed the importance of ensuring free and fair voting. “Do not buy votes with money or goods. This is illegal,” the organisation reminded.

TIV concluded by wishing voters well and urging them to seek guidance through prayer. “Pray to God, and He will hear your voice. In God we stand.”
