Evelyn Toa, the former President of the Media Association of Vanuatu (MAV), has been a prominent voice in advocating for the effective implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) law in Vanuatu.

She made a passionate call to the public to make good use of this important legislation that the parliament passed recently.

Toa addressed the media personnel during Thursday’s celebration to mark the ‘International Day of Universal Access to Information’ held in Port Vila. The global theme of the day was ‘the importance of the online space for access to information.

Mrs. Toa stressed that this day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness among the people about their right to access information, which the government may be reluctant to release or make available to the public. She emphasised that the RTI law protects this fundamental right for all citizens of Vanuatu.

“In today’s world, the public sector and government agencies are increasingly utilizing new technologies, such as digital platforms, for various work and service delivery purposes,” Mrs. Toa stated.

“With these new technologies and digital platforms, government agencies need to play an active role in managing and disseminating information, ensuring that it is stored securely and that accurate records are maintained.”

With the international theme in mind, she highlighted that the online space plays a vital role in empowering citizens to access government information.

“When we have access to information online, citizens can engage with government agencies, submit requests for the services that the government provides, and sometimes even question the government about its service delivery to the people,” she added.

The Vanuatu parliament passed the RTI law in November 2016 and gazette it in February 2017. This legislation is pivotal in ensuring transparency and accountability in the government and granting citizens the right to access information.
