Vanuatu’s star striker Leimata Simon continued to shine at the OFC Women’s Champions League, scoring her fourth goal of the tournament despite her team’s 2-1 loss to the Solomon Islands in Suva yesterday.

Simon, who scored an impressive hat-trick in their opening match against Tonga, found the back of the net again in the 81st minute.

Spotting an opening, she fired a brilliant shot past Solomon Islands’ goalkeeper Zainab Donga, whose full stretch was not enough to deny the goal.

The match, held on match day four of Group B, saw the Solomon Islands claim their first win of the tournament under coach Moses Toata.

They opened the scoring with a penalty converted by Ileen Pegi in the first half, giving them a 1-0 lead at the break.

Vanuatu fought hard to equalize but suffered a blow early in the second half when midfielder Henriette Sangul received a yellow card in the 52nd minute.

Solomon Islands doubled their advantage through Madeline Arukau, whose goal proved to be the match winner.

Vanuatu were handed a golden opportunity to narrow the gap with a penalty after a handball in the box, but Sangul was unable to convert.

Coach Robert Yalou’s side pushed forward with determination in the final minutes, earning a free kick after a foul by Solomon Islands’ Naelyn Metake, but could not find the equaliser before the final whistle, despite seven minutes of added time.

“This was one of our good games,” Coach Yalou reflected after the match. “We missed a lot of chances and couldn’t convert them, but we’ll look at our mistakes, adjust, and come back stronger for our next pool match against Fiji.”
