A high voter turnout was recorded across the four polling stations of Melemaat, Mele, and Blacksand during the provincial elections yesterday.

At the Melemaat Presbyterian Church polling station, Presiding Officer Jimmy Tamkela confirmed an increase in voter numbers compared to previous elections, with a total of 936 voters casting their ballots.

He noted a rise in youth participation, particularly due to a youth candidate standing in Melemaat Village. Tamkela said long queues formed from morning until midday. Although polling was scheduled to close at 4:30pm, the officer extended voting by one hour to 5:30pm to allow working voters to participate after finishing their shifts.

While the process ran smoothly overall, some voters were unable to cast their ballots due to discrepancies between the addresses on their identification cards and their current residences.

Similar results were observed at the Mele polling station. Presiding Officer Jonathan Kaltanak reported that with 3,344 registered voters, turnout was high compared to previous elections. No major issues were recorded.

At the Blacksand polling station, Presiding Officer James Jacob reported 4,000 registered voters. He confirmed that three ballot boxes were completely filled, and voting continued from morning into the evening without incident.

Election officials across all three sites commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of the polls and acknowledged the strong participation of voters fulfilling their civic duty.
