The Lopevi volcano on Paama is showing renewed signs of activity.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) has raised the warning level from 1 to 2.

Lopevi is located south of Ambrym’s Marum and Benbow, which are both categorized at level 3- major unrest stage. Visitors, and villages of Paama and Epi are urged to consider this seriously and stay away from the volcano to avoid volcanic hazards, the VMGD has advised.

Lopevi volcano, like Mt Yasur on Tanna is a stratovolcano.

It is steep, compared to shield volcanoes like Lombenben on Ambae which is built entirely of fluid lava flows.

The VMGD will continue to closely monitor the activity of this volcano and more information will be provided accordingly when necessary.
