Port Vila Deputy Lady Mayor, Leimara Malaki, urges community leaders in town to promote changes in men’s behaviour towards women as an effective way in preventing the escalating rapes in Vanuatu.

“Many men who are behind bars today are convicted rapists so Vanuatu leaders have a mountain of task to educate their boys, young men as well as old to change their behaviour towards girls and women,” the outspoken elected Port Vila councillor said.

Malakai made the comments in the wake of widespread rape cases around Vanuatu and particularly in the outskirts of the City of Port Vila.

She said when the late Father Walter Lini said ‘Respect is Honourable’ he meant that “respect is a two way street. You respect others so that they will respect you”.

The Port Vila Councillor appealed to young girls and women not to dress in provocative clothing and not to indulge in alcohol drinking with boys or walk in the night alone or are home alone because under these circumstances they are vulnerable to being raped. READ MORE
