The Vila Central Hospital has one mammogram machine, a device that can detect cancer in breasts, however it isn’t being used because the country doesn’t have the specific expertise in this field.
During a discussion with the founder of Ik-kana Cancer Foundation Max Albert this week, he mentioned that options for women with breast cancer are limited in Vanuatu, which is why most cases are referred to New Caledonia.
Albert featured on the weekly Kava mo Kajap and explained the hardships a lot of Vanuatu women had gone through after finding out they have cancer, many of which had succumbed to the diseases due to lack of funding or if the cancer had already progressed to stages 4 or 5.
However, Ik-kana has plans this year to resolve the mammogram problem by collaborating with medical professionals from India, a venture that Albert is excited to announce in Pink-tober.
