VPF enforces breathalyser testing
The Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) has begun enforcing breathalyser tests on vehicle drivers in response to the number of traffic incidents, many of which are related to drunk-driving.
This marks the first time ever that the Port Vila Traffic Unit is using a breathalyser device. The officers tested over 50 vehicle drivers who passed through the Central Business District, and were able to confiscate some vehicles where drivers tested positive for being under the influence of alcohol.
It’s a long-awaited effort and, at times, a cry from from the public for the police officers to change how they handle vehicle drivers, especially when it comes to drinking and driving on public roads.
In August 2025, all traffic officers underwent breathalyser training, which helped them learn how to properly use the device and ensure proper recording of results, especially when a driver tests positive for alcohol consumption.
Since there are a lot of many events coming up, particularly the Christmas festive season, the VPF will continue to conduct these operations and carry out breathalyser tests on all drivers to ensure that everyone driving or riding in a vehicle is safe at all times.
The Port Vila Road Traffic Section is committed to ensuring the safety of the society and will use every available resource in the coming months to minimize drink driving during events at all times.
Young man stabs mother with knife
A young man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his mother with a knife on Tanna last week.
The Lounapkalangis community assisted the police in arresting the man, who is now in remand. He was charged for intentional assault causing permanent injuries and domestic violence.
His mother is current at the Lenakel Hospital, suffering from permanent injuries.
VPF urges all men, women, and especially young people, to think carefully before taking actions that could destroy the lives of other people.
Over many years, the VPF has observed that the nature of crime within society and communities has been changing. Many men, women, and even children have become victims of these crimes, suffering mental, physical, and emotional harm.
VPF also noticed that many crimes are committed due to a lack of proper upbringing at home, the influence of technology, and the rapid changes in lifestyle within society and communities. Respect and love are slowly fading as individuals adapt to these changes, and communities grow in new directions.
These negative behaviors are increasing, and crime is spreading across all islands.
FNQR, ADF, and VMF collaborate on Epi patrol and training
A team from the Delta Company from the 51st Far North Queensland Regiment (FNQR) were in Vanuatu for outer island patrolling, targeting Epi Island with a partnered patrol between Australian Defence Force (ADF) members.
After the deployment, two training courses were conducted: The Regional Surveillance Force Unit Patrolman’s Course and the Regional Force Surveillance Unit Patrol Second in Charge (2IC) Course.
The two courses ran concurrently over three weeks, covering basic navigation, patrol formations, field operations, report writing, immediate action drills, and essential soldiering skills. The 2IC course was a more advanced course, where participants learned to deliver back briefs, write and deliver orders, create orders using the Memory, Understanding, and Doing (MUD) model, and lead a section in the field during contact.
A total of 21 VMF members participated in the patrolman’s course, while eight VMF members and four ADF members participated in the 2IC course.
All participants successfully completed the training. On Tuesday, the Australian Defence Attaché, David Silverstone, and VPF Acting Commissioner Astrophile Mwele presented gifts and certificates to the participants, celebrating the success of the training and strengthening the relationship between the 51st Far North Queensland Regiment and the VMF.
During the closing ceremony, the Defence Attaché and Acting Commissioner took the opportunity to promote four ADF officers from Private to Lands Corporal.
