A police officer was arrested on Monday this week and has been remanded at the Correctional Centre facility in Port Vila, awaiting his court appearance.

He is facing charges of an act of indecency without consent and sexual intercourse without consent.

The officer will appear in the Magistrates Court on May 20, 2024, at 8:30am.

Police Media confirmed this case is currently under Police investigation.

In response to this alleged incident, the Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC) has come out to voice their concern.

They are condemning the actions of the officer, especially as police officers hold positions of power and trust in our community.

“Men’s violence against women and girls, including sexual assault occurs across various settings, including homes, workplaces, public spaces, and online platforms,” VWC stated.

“It affects women of all ages, backgrounds, and social statuses, and it can have devastating physical, emotional, and psychological consequences on survivors.

“Addressing men’s violence against women and girls requires a collective effort from individuals, communities, governments, and institutions.

“It involves promoting gender equality, challenging harmful gender norms, providing support and resources for survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable through legal systems and policies.

“Creating a culture of respect, consent, and non-violence is essential to eliminate this form of violence and create a safer and more equitable society for all.”
