SHEFA-Health-nurses equipped-to-tackle-vaccination-barriers

Twenty SHEFA Health nurses participated in a weeklong micro-planning training in early October, equipping them with essential tools to better collect and analyse demographic data and understand population structures in Emua, North Efate.

The training, a key part of ongoing efforts to improve vaccine coverage and health outcomes across the SHEFA Province, also addressed identifying barriers to vaccination, including cultural and logistical challenges.

Health Communications Officer Marama Jacob said the primary objective was to provide community nurses with skills and knowledge to effectively map their catchment areas, identify regions with low vaccination rates, and develop targeted action plans to address these issues. Nurses learned to use mapping tools and technologies to visualise health data, identify areas with lower vaccination rates, and target interventions more precisely.

Participants included representatives from key organisations such as Vaccine Preventable Disease Immunisation (VDI), Integrated Project Management (IPM), the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), highlighting a collective commitment to advancing public health and ensuring access to essential vaccinations for every child.

Ms Jacob emphasised the importance of integrating health strategies and outreach activities to encourage a comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery. The training, organised by the VDI, provided a vital platform for knowledge exchange and skill development, ultimately aiming to empower local healthcare providers to strengthen community health efforts.

By focusing on micro-planning, this initiative aims to deliver targeted solutions that will improve coverage and health outcomes for the populations served.
